I learned more than how to start a business, I learned to start a business that will survive, so I can survive, too.”
Carolina is a 16-year-old from Bolivia, who lives in a single room house with her mother and brother. She spends her days on the streets collecting plastic bottles and metal from the garbage to sell for mere coins per kilo.
After taking Street Kids International’s Street Business and Street Banking trainings, Carolina decided to use her love of theatre to start her own business. She now uses the scraps of materials she finds in the garbage to make puppets and marionettes. She sells them on the streets while performing short plays inspired by her life.
I learned more than how to start a business,” Carolina says. “I learned to start a business that will survive, so I can survive, too.”
Recently, Carolina and her small theatre group were paid to perform their street theatre in a local school. She now plans to approach other schools in the city and sell them her “Street Education” kit so that teachers can use the marionettes and short plays to teach other youth about the realities of street kids in Bolivia.
