our training approach.

The success of our programmes is grounded in the following elements:

  1. Street Kids International believes strongly that young people have the right to share their experiences
  2. And plan for their future. We use a participatory approach that allows youth to express their opinions and
  3. share their experiences in multiple ways. Through the use of stories, animation, games, role
  4. play, community interactions and mapping as well as written charts and one-on-one mentoring,
  5. youth build their skills and capabilities to make safe and healthy choices for their future.

Our approach to training youth and youth workers is based on the following practices used for our street health and street work programs.

  1. Training of Trainers Methodology
Training of Trainers workshops allow youth workers to learn by observing live demonstrations of trainings with youth. Trainers are able to ask questions, receive coaching and test the methodology for themselves, practicing delivery within the supportive training environment. They are thus able to share their own unique skills and ideas to further develop the most effective techniques for the young people that they work with.

  2. Fostering Organizational Development
Street Kids International supports local youth serving organizations as partners in becoming active leaders in developing, promoting and disseminating best practices through partner networks. In addition, Street Kids develops and fosters national teams of M aster T rainers, who take the lead in training others on how to effectively teach street kids. Master T rainers work to strengthen the capacity of local organizations to implement effective learning and earning opportunities for youth. Those who excel have the opportunity to lead trainings in other countries and in doing so reinforce South-South partnerships and knowledge exchange within Street Kids International’s global partner network.

  3. Adaptation to local cultural context and experience
Workshops and training materials are often reshaped by local partners to enhance the success of income-generating activities within their particular communities. Partners package and share these successful adaptations with peers worldwide to build a firm knowledge base of best practices.

  4. Animation
Our tools include animation about, and for street involved young people. These animated videos and supporting materials transcend the limits of language and cultural specificity to generate dialogue with young people. Street youth can see their own lives reflected in the stories, and begin to talk and think about meeting their unique challenges head-on.
