Currently Street Kids supports 8 interns through the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) who are working with our partners in the following countries:  Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Bolivia, India and the Philippines.

eligibility

Street Kids International is currently recruiting for a third cohort of 8 internship placements lasting 6-8 months depending on the country of placement. Interns will be expected to attend a 5 day pre-departure training in Toronto in mid January 2012 and should expect to depart shortly thereafter. All interns should have language skills relevant to the posting location, or language acquisition skills. Interns must demonstrate the ability to adapt to new cultures and climates, have experience living or working overseas and be able to prove skills related to adaptability, enterprise, leadership and patience. Interns will be expected to "hit the ground running" and be able to perform at a high level with minimal supervision in a constantly changing environment.

Experience and skills in facilitation and research, knowledge of gender and international development issues, understanding of monitoring and evaluation and experience with youth are also required. Interns will be responsible for various public engagement activities, relating their experiences to the Canadian public through social media, presentations and forums.

To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program, an intern must be:

  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • A post-secondary graduate - graduate of a degree or diploma program from a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP
  • Out of school
  • Between the ages of 19 and 30
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

The intern will work with Make a Better World Kenya (MABWOK) to strengthen their youth entrepreneurship programming and sustainability. MABWOK is a not-for-profit organization based in Kenya that seeks to empower poor people living in urban slums and rural areas through the provision of education, training and economic empowerment. MABWOK is located in Mukuru, Nairobi and currently supports programs in 3 areas: Economic and Livelihood Support Programme, Youth Education and Training Programme and the Maternal and Reproductive Health Programme.

Position Description

  • Provide logistical support for implementation of youth livelihood training program
  • Provide support for IT and literacy training
  • Support MABWOK to develop a framework for youth business plan review and loan application process
  • Document and monitor the development of youth savings and loan clubs

La Paz, Bolivia
youth livelihood officer

This internship will strengthen the Bolivian institutions team (CDEA) through the exchange of knowledge and experience pertaining to youth development, and will further Street Kids International's programming of accompanied livelihood training. This project will focus on the use and enhancement of participatory educational tools to improve the quality of life and social conditions of marginalized youth and foster self-sustainability. CDEA operates out of La Paz and seeks to develop initiatives, actions, and strategies oriented to improve the quality of life and strengthen the potential of populations in social disadvantage. CDEA has directed its efforts to promoting diversity, equality, universal human rights and human values through the development and implementation of innovative, educational training programs for both formal and non-formal streams. Fluency in Spanish is a requirement for this position.

  • Deliver entrepreneurship training modules including Street Kids International's own Street Business Toolkit and Street Banking Toolkit

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
youth livelihood officer

This internship will strengthen the Emmanuel Development Association's (EDA) capacity by providing support to entrepreneurship training modules and implementation and testing of a peer mentorship module. The intern will also be responsible for monitoring and evaluation of the training, gender analysis of training materials and supporting EDA's leadership and participation in a community of practice.

EDA envisions a country where children have the opportunity to develop their capabilities so that they can participate equally in the development of their communities, regions and country irrespective of ethnic group, social class or gender.

EDA assists communities in the following areas: Education and Training, Integrated Community Health and Sanitation, Gender and Women Empowerment and Advocacy Work. Since its establishment, EDA has been at the forefront of community development, with over 11 years of experience in designing and implementing integrated community development for children, women and employment programmes for youth in Ethiopia.

HELP Salone in Sierra Leone is a local non-profit working with marginalized youth, women and children in the most deprived and underserved communities in Sierra Leone. HELP has a wealth of experience in implementing diverse development programs in Sierra Leone in areas such as water and sanitation, skills training income generation for women, micro-finance, youth support and food security.

Arusha, Tanzania
youth livelihood officer

The intern will be a member of the children's program staff group at Mkombozi, providing technical assistance and capacity building to the staff and children's program coordinator in developing and implementing methodologies and processes for delivering youth livelihood interventions. The intern will facilitate youth's participation in program processes and interventions meant to improve their livelihood, including the refinement of a micro-franchise toolkit for young people. The intern will advise on the review of systems and their compatible implementation in addition to facilitating the development of tools and techniques to enable staff members to achieve quality interventions in youth livelihood and gender inclusive programming.

This internship will strengthen the Project Concern International India (PCI/India) team by coordinating the Street Source program and youth livelihood interventions.

Street Source is a job readiness program for marginalized youth to improve their quality of life through meaningful sustainable safe formal employment at an entry level.

PCI/India has been active since 1997 and is an affiliate of Project Concern International. The India country office is located in New Delhi and has five regional offices around the country. PCI/India has developed a diverse portfolio of programs in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support; polio eradication; water and sanitation; micro-enterprise and micro finance; humanitarian assistance and children at risk.

Manila, Philippines
street youth job readiness coordinator

The intern's support of the Street Source project in partnership with Street Kids International and Virlanie Foundation, Inc. will contribute to the self sufficiency and independent living for the youth that Virlanie works with.

Virlanie offers a number of community outreach programs that provide social support and education to the children and families of Manila's poorest neighbourhoods. The Virlanie Foundation, Inc. (VFI) is a private non-sectarian child caring institution in Metro Manila, Philippines. The foundation serves children found living in the streets as well as those referred by other institutions. Virlanie works to prevent the future physical and psychological abuse of children. It envisions empowered children who see a brighter future for themselves.

Position Description

  • Collaborate with the YAP Coordinator and the Magellan Learning Center Coordinator on the development of the curriculum based on the needs of the young adults
  • Assist the Street Source Coordinator and Family Program Social Worker in implementing the screening and orientation process for selected youth beneficiaries
  • Draft components of the curriculum and presents to the team for review and approval.
  • Pilot components of the curriculum with young adults
  • Prepare materials and other training activities in collaboration with YAPC and MLCC
