Street Kids Direct have been delivering Child Protection training to AFE, Honduras.

This is an exciting new development as all the projects we know in Guatemala and Honduras have not had any training in child protection or have much in the way of manuals or guidelines for staff and volunteers on how to work with children.

We have recently finished our training course for all staff and volunteers who work in the projects we support.  As part of our "Partnership Agreement" with each of our partners a robust Child Protection policy and training course must be in place. Those who don't have this in place are encouraged to take advantage of the new course now available in Spanish, developed by Duncan and Herbert.

AFE, Honduras, who work with the children from the rubbish dump, were the first to be offered the course.  A full day was planned for the first week of September where staff could come to a relaxing hotel environment and participate in an important course that will hopefully define how they now work with their children.  It will also have implications on visitors and volunteers.

The training day consisted of five different topics under the main header of child protection.  Duncan enjoyed talking to the staff about Honduran laws that few were aware of that places all adults caring for or offering services to children in a legal position wherby they can be prosecuted if they don't act within 24 hours of being aware of a child who is being neglected or abused.  The staff liked the law that places the Honduran Government in the protagonist role in keeping children safe and asked if the Government itself could be taken to court for not acting in the best interests of the child!  Hopefully this new awareness will lead to many more children being kept safe.

The day ended with Herbert presenting the diplomas and new specially designed ID badges being given to all the staff as one of the protocols we hope AFE will now put in place.

On return to Guatemala Duncan met with Social Services who asked about the course.  When they reviewed the material they were impressed and asked for it be offered to all their staff!

Thanks to Global Care and to Street Kids Direct supporters for helping to make this possible.  If anyone would like to sponsor the production of the training manuals or one of the actual training courses for one of the projects we support please do This email address is being protected from spambots.
